3rd Austrian Anti-Racism Fair
60 Years of UN Day Against Racism | Asian Communities Empowerment – The Filipino Europeans | The Headscarf Debate | Good Practices from Vienna & Upper Austria
On Friday, March 13, 2026, the 3rd Austrian Anti-Racism Fair will open at the Central European University (CEU), Quellenstrasse 51, 1100 Vienna. The fair marks the launch of the nationwide Anti-Racism Days (Antirassismus-Tage) and brings together stakeholders from civil society, academia, and community work. This year’s program features a special focus on Asian Community Empowerment and the 60th anniversary of the UN Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In addition to information booths from 16 participating organizations, the event offers compelling panel discussions on topics such as Anti-Racism & Climate Justice and the current headscarf ban (presented from the perspective of Muslim women). We are particularly pleased to welcome Upper Austria as this year’s guest province, providing valuable „Good Practice“ insights into their regional anti-racism initiatives.

6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. – Hunting, Mapping, Owning – from Safari Empire to Climate Crisis: Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the Colonial Invention of “African wilderness”
Our panel explores how the idea of “African wilderness” was not a natural fact but a colonial construction. From Austro-Hungarian hunting expeditions and scientific mapping practices to today’s conservation finance and carbon markets, we want to trace how hunting, mapping and owning became interconnected tools of power. The invention of “empty” landscapes enabled extraction, racialized displacement and the erasure of Indigenous land stewardship — dynamics that continue in contemporary climate politics. By linking safari imperialism to today’s climate crisis, we ask: how do historical imaginaries of wilderness shape current conservation regimes, and who benefits — or is displaced — in the name of protecting nature?
- Keynote: John Mbaria (Environmental Journalist, Kenya)
- Historian: Vanessa Spanbauer (Vienna)
- Moderation: Remi Tchokothe (University of Vienna)
