ommunity Empowerment and the 60th anniversary of the UN Day for the Elimin
ation of Racial Discrimination. In addition to information booths from 16

ning – from Safari Empire to Climate Crisis: Austro-Hungarian Monarchy a
nd the Colonial Invention of “African wilderness”\nOur panel explores
how the idea of “African wilderness” was not a natural fact but a colo
nial construction. From Austro-Hungarian hunting expeditions and scientifi
c mapping practices to today’s conservation finance and carbon markets\,
we want to trace how hunting\, mapping and owning became interconnected t
ools of power. The invention of “empty” landscapes enabled extraction\
, racialized displacement and the erasure of Indigenous land stewardship
 — dynamics that continue in contemporary climate politics. By linking sa
fari imperialism to today’s climate crisis\, we ask: how do historical i
maginaries of wilderness shape current conservation regimes\, and who bene
fits — or is displaced — in the name of protecting nature?\n\n	Keynote
